What the name means
Within Santo Daime terminology, a linha ("line") refers to a current or grouping of spiritual force, and by extension to the ritual or set of hymns that calls upon it. Arrochim (sometimes spelled Arroxim) is the name of a specific spiritual entity described in the hinário as a hummingbird who appears when invoked from nine points. Linha de Arrochim therefore names both the entity and the work built around it.
The hinário and the work
The 39-hymn collection known as Linha de Arrochim was compiled in the late 1960s by Padrinho Wilson Carneiro, who the tradition holds received a healing mission from Mestre Irineu. Its hymns are sung seated, without maracás or other instruments until the closing hymns, and the work calls for particular concentration and silence, alongside another monthly healing work, Estrela, held earlier in the month for general cleansing.
Recurring themes across the hinário include harmony, truth, and forgiveness, discipline, and faith in Jesus, the Virgin Mother, and Juramidam, alongside direct invocation of what the hymns describe as the healing spirits of the Linha de Arrochim.
Its place in the tradition
When a church announces a Linha de Arrochim work, members understand it as an evening set aside for personal and collective healing through this current, and some experienced members study the hinário closely as a guide to how the work is traditionally carried out. The work is also understood within the community as a living connection to Padrinho Wilson Carneiro's ministry and to Mestre Irineu's early practice of tending to the sick in Rio Branco, tying it to a longer lineage of Amazonian healing traditions. As with other healing works, the Linha de Arrochim is a spiritual practice held on someone's behalf, not a medical treatment.
