VIVAs were first introduced in 1939 by Guilherme, the son of Antônio Gomes, who witnessed participants in the astral plane giving these exclamations during works of Santo Daime. Since then, they have become a traditional form of greeting during certain celebrations and official ceremonies. However, there are important guidelines:

From the time Mestre arrived in Acre, his goal was to leave the Doctrine fully established so we could continue in his absence. Each year, he refined various elements — always under the guidance of his spiritual mother — adjusting details such as the uniform until reaching the current form. In the same manner, he defined official festivities, like the celebration of Saint Joseph (initially suggested by Mr. Francisco Grangeiro) and the hymnbook in praise of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, both included in the official calendar of works.

When giving a VIVA, the person should stand — ideally facing the Cruzeiro — to greet the celebration of the day. Everyone, particularly the men, may respond with a cheer. VIVAs should be avoided during healing and concentration works, during hymns prior to the Confession, on Maundy Thursday, and on All Souls’ Day. They may be offered to honor elements of nature, the owner of the hymnbook being sung, churches or communities, visitors, or birthday celebrants.
