PIT SEÑOR CEBUANO
English
It is sung in Cebuano, the Philippine dialect spoken on her home island of Cebu and throughout the central Philippines. “Pit Señor” is the short form of “Sangpit sa Señor,” a phrase that means, “to call, ask, and plead to the King.”
So who is the King? Señor! Señor is Jesus.
This prayer dance is performed every Jánuary during the festival of “Sinulog” in a procession that is dedicated to Santo Niño – the Divine baby Jesus. It is an ancient tradition dating back to the time of the Rajah. Láter it was syncretized with Christianity after Magellan brought Catholocism to the Philippines in 1521.
