SANTA MISSA DAS ALMAS
HOLY MASS FOR THE SOULS
This ritual is performed on the dates indicated by the Official Calendar of the Passing of Sebastião Mota de Melo —on the feast of Saint Sebastian (January 20), Good Friday during Holy Week, the Passing of Mestre Irineu (July 6), All Souls’ Day (November 2), as well as on the first Monday of each month (after the Rosary of Souls). It is also conducted for farewells of those who have passed (at the time of their body being present, on the seventh day, and on the first anniversary of their passing) and on special occasions upon request to the presidency of the local center.
It must always be held at 4:00 PM, with participants wearing blue uniforms, except when conducted after an official hymnary, in which case white uniforms are worn.
Musical instruments are not played, nor is there dancing. Participants remain seated around the table (in groups of 5, 7, 9, or 12), with men and women seated on their respective sides.
The ritual begins with:
“By the sign of the Holy Cross, deliver us, O God, our Lord, from our enemies. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
Then, the Rosary is initiated (according to the specific ritual), and at its conclusion, hymns are sung. Between each hymn, three Our Fathers and three Hail Marys are prayed, interspersed with a Glory Be.
