Oxóssi Tupinambá

Caboclo Tupinambá is a spirit guide venerated within Umbanda, understood as a manifestation of the Orixá Oxóssi and named for one of Brazil's largest historical indigenous confederations.

Name and character

The Tupinambá confederation once encompassed a number of related peoples along much of Brazil's coast, including groups such as the Tamoios, Temiminós, Tupiniquins, and Potiguara. Practitioners describe Caboclo Tupinambá as calm and steady, firm but warm, wise and patient — often summed up in a saying attributed to him: that he is like bamboo, able to bend without breaking.

Role within Umbanda

Practitioners describe his following, or legion, as unusually large, which they attribute to the scale of the historical Tupinambá presence along the Brazilian coast before colonization. Within Umbanda, this line is regarded as one that favors resolving spiritual conflict through patience and diplomacy rather than direct confrontation, an approach devotees link to the same steadiness that defines his character.
