Glossary

Ogum

Ogum is the Orixá of war, fire, and ironworking in Umbanda and Candomblé — the divine blacksmith whose protection, the tradition holds, is needed for work with metal to succeed.

Character and symbols

Ogum is described as strong, combative, and impulsive, and his children are said to share his courage and determination. His emblem is the sword, his color navy blue, and his element earth.

Syncretism

Ogum is most commonly syncretized with Saint George in Brazilian Afro-Catholic devotion, a pairing covered in more detail in this glossary's entry on Saint George, where it connects directly to Santo Daime's own alliance with the Umbanda line.
