The icon
The image, in the Eastern Christian world known as the Virgin of the Passion because it shows instruments of Christ's Passion, has been in Rome since 1499 and is enshrined today in the church of Sant'Alfonso di Liguori. Pope Pius IX placed the Redemptorist order in charge of it in 1865, and their missionary work carried reproductions of it across the Catholic world; the Vatican granted it a formal Canonical Coronation in 1867.
Observance
The feast day falls on June 27, with a weekly novena held on Wednesdays in churches that keep the devotion. Under Pope Pius XII, Our Lady of Perpetual Help was also named patroness of Haiti and of Almoradí in Spain.
