Jesus

Within Santo Daime devotional writing, Jesus is often approached less as a historical subject than as a living presence — the Christ within — described through images of gardens, flowers, and cultivated love.

A devotional image

One recurring image in this literature treats Christ's sacrifice as a seed planted in the human heart, and speaks of tending that inward presence the way a gardener tends a flower: with patient, active love rather than sentimental feeling alone. Writers in this vein warn against a devotion that stays at the level of longing or fantasy, since that, they argue, clouds real spiritual clarity rather than deepening it.

This is a strand of religious reflection and symbolism found in Santo Daime writing, not a claim about the historical Jesus of the Gospels — readers encountering it should take it as one tradition's devotional language rather than as biography or doctrine binding on other Christian communities.

Further

Christ is addressed in the hymns and in the vivas as Redentor, the Redeemer, and the doctrine's Christian frame is not decorative: the prayers said in the works are Catholic prayers, and the calendar of feasts is a Catholic calendar. Rehen's study of Daime music outside Brazil traces how that frame travels — what the hymns carry when they are sung in a place with no Catholic background to rest on.
