Iansã

Iansã is the orixá (a deity in Yoruba-derived religion) of winds and storms, venerated within Candomblé and Umbanda — both Afro-Brazilian religions — as mistress of lightning and keeper of the dead.

Character and symbols

Devotees describe Iansã as impulsive, unpredictable, courageous, and stubborn — qualities the tradition holds are shared by those considered her spiritual children. She is represented by the sword and the horsetail whisk, her color is red, and her element is fire.

In Catholic syncretism, common across Afro-Brazilian religious practice, Iansã is identified with Saint Barbara.
