A word with two faces
Cura's double meaning is worth noticing: the same root gives English cure, in the sense of restoring health or balance, while also carrying overtones of trouble, anxiety, and sorrow. Read this way, a cure is not simply a fix but an active process of bringing attention and care to whatever distress accompanies illness — the loss of health, of an imagined future, or of other things particular to each person.

The same root shows up, more distantly, in words like accurate, secure, and sure. English curious arrived by a different route, through Old French from the Latin curiosus ("careful, diligent, inquisitive"), narrowing over time to its modern sense of inquisitiveness — even though, as the etymology hints, an excess of curiosity does not always come paired with enough care.
