Arranca Toco

This entry describes Caboclo Arranca Toco, a spirit honored within Umbanda, an Afro-Brazilian religion, associated with the line of Oxóssi and closely tied to Omulu, an orixá linked to healing and the earth.

Leader of a rare falange

Within Umbanda, Arranca Toco is described as the head of a falange (spirit legion) made up of caboclos connected to Omulu — spirits considered rare because tradition holds that only mediums linked to Omulu's most senior lineage receive them. His incorporation is said to resemble that of a Preto Velho, an elder spirit: slow-moving, supported by a staff, speaking little. When he manifests through mediums more closely tied to Oxóssi, practitioners describe him as quicker and more upright.

A healer among his people

Tradition holds that in life he was a healer, teaching his people the uses of plants and herbs, and that in spirit form he continues this work by turning negative energy into positive energy rather than through direct confrontation. His principal subordinate is said to be Caboclo Araúna, part of the same Omulu-linked line; other caboclos in this group carry the Tupi suffix una, meaning "black," marking their connection to Omulu.
