What the abbreviations stand for
Most of these acronyms fall into a few recurring categories. One is Brazilian government bodies that regulate health, drugs, and land: ANVISA (the National Health Surveillance Agency), CONAD (the National Council on Drug Policies), and FUNAI (the National Indian Foundation) among them. Another is academic and research groups that study ayahuasca, psychoactive substances, or indigenous health, such as NEIP, an interdisciplinary center for research on psychoactive substances.
A third category covers Santo Daime's own institutional history. CICLU–Alto Santo refers to the Universal Light Christian Illumination Center founded at Alto Santo, one of the tradition's earliest recognized congregations, and ICEFLU, the Church of the Eclectic Cult of the Universal Flowing Light, is a later umbrella body that grew out of it. International bodies appear too, from the United Nations and its 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances to the European Court of Human Rights, reflecting the legal questions these traditions have faced abroad.
